Cadaver dogs, also known as a Human Remains Detection Dogs (HRD), can sniff out a dead body and alert their handler by barking or sitting. As far as I have found the deepest a buried body has been alerted to is about fifteen feet. Trained dogs can tell the difference between animal and human bones as well. So which breed is best suited? Depending on training any breed can do it but the ones with the best sense of smell are the bloodhounds with over 300 million scent receptors. I’ve been told dogs smell something like this: you enter a house and smell the stew on the stove. A dog enters the same house and smells the beef, the carrots, the onions, the spices individually, and on and on. Pretty amazing!

This is my dog Joe. He is not a cadaver dog. In fact, he thinks he is a cat.
